One day in Madrid: a practical walking itinerary

If you only have one day, the good news is that essential Madrid fits into a walk of about 8–10 km with no need for transport. This itinerary is designed for a weekday, with alternatives for Sundays, rainy days and summer.

Morning (9:30 am–1:30 pm): Sol, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace

  1. 9:30 · Puerta del Sol. Photo at kilometre zero and the Bear and Strawberry Tree. Churros at San Ginés if you have not had breakfast.
  2. 10:00 · Plaza Mayor and San Miguel Market. Enter through the Arco de Cuchilleros and peek into the market (better now than at lunchtime, when it is packed).
  3. 10:45 · Royal Palace. With a ticket bought online, the visit takes 1–1.5 hours. Afterwards, cross to Almudena Cathedral and walk down to Plaza de Oriente.
  4. 12:30 · Sabatini Gardens or Campo del Moro for the best view of the palace.

Midday (1:30–3:30 pm): tapas in La Latina

From the palace, walk down Calle Bailén and Calle Mayor to La Latina. Cava Baja is lined with traditional taverns: huevos rotos, croquetas, tortilla and sharing plates. Madrid eats late: at 2 pm you will be right on local time. On Sundays the area fills with people coming from El Rastro.

Afternoon (4–7:30 pm): the Prado or the Retiro

Two options depending on your taste:

Sunset and evening: Gran Vía and Huertas

From Cibeles, walk up Gran Vía: the Metrópolis and Telefónica buildings, the musical theatres and the Schweppes sign at Callao. For views over the city, the Círculo de Bellas Artes rooftop or nearby hotel terraces are good options (paid or with a drink). For a free plan, the Temple of Debod is the classic sunset viewpoint.

For dinner, head back to the Literary Quarter or Malasaña: local atmosphere, sharing plates and vermouth. Dinner in Madrid starts from 9 pm.
