Atocha, Delicias and Madrid Río
Contemporary art, historic trains and the riverside park along the Manzanares.

South of the Paseo del Prado, the Atocha area is Madrid’s great railway gateway: Atocha station receives the AVE high-speed trains and most Cercanías commuter lines. Around it are first-class museums such as the Reina Sofía and the Royal Botanic Garden, and to the south-west stretches the Arganzuela district with Delicias, Legazpi and the Madrid Río park.
It is less touristy than the historic centre and more residential, and very practical if you arrive by train or want to combine a museum, a riverside walk and contemporary culture at Matadero.
What to see
Reina Sofía Museum
Spain’s national museum of modern and contemporary art, with Picasso’s Guernica as the star plus works by Dalí and Miró. Free entry in the last hours on most days (see our museums guide).
Atocha station
The 19th-century iron train shed sits alongside the modern station. The historic tropical garden in the old concourse has been affected by the station’s redevelopment works: check its status before going specially.
Royal Botanic Garden
Next to the Prado, an 18th-century garden with glasshouses and thousands of species. A peaceful break between museums (small entry fee).
Railway Museum
In the old Delicias station: steam locomotives, historic carriages and model railways. One weekend a month it hosts the Mercado de Motores, a design, vintage and street-food market.
Matadero Madrid
The former municipal slaughterhouse by Legazpi, now a contemporary arts centre with exhibitions, theatre (Naves del Español), cinema and fairs. Many activities are free.
Madrid Río
A linear park along the Manzanares with cycle lanes, bridges such as Dominique Perrault’s Arganzuela footbridge, urban water “beaches” in summer and views north to the Royal Palace.

Where to eat and go for tapas
Around Atocha and Calle Argumosa (already in Lavapiés) there are terraces and bars for lunch before or after the Reina Sofía. Inside Matadero and around Legazpi you will find cafés and simple, modern eateries.
Delicias and Palos de la Frontera are full of neighbourhood bars with set lunch menus at lower prices than the centre: a good option if you are spending the day in the area.

Getting around
Metro Estación del Arte (line 1), next to the Reina Sofía; Atocha (line 1 and Cercanías, at the train station); Delicias (line 3 and Cercanías); Legazpi (lines 3 and 6) for Matadero and Madrid Río. From Puerta del Sol to Atocha is about a 20-minute walk.

Tips
- If you arrive at Atocha by AVE, Cercanías gets you to Sol in a few minutes (C-3 and C-4), or take the metro inside the station.
- Madrid Río is perfect for a BiciMAD e-bike ride along the flat riverside.
- The Reina Sofía can be overwhelming: head straight to Collection 1 (second floor) for Guernica and decide from there.
- Check the events calendar: Matadero and the Railway Museum have lots of weekend programming.
